Glaciar Sur Aventura
South Glacier Adventure, Trekking, Sailing and a Hidden Glacier Amphitheater, a full-day experience designed for travelers seeking a deeper, more challenging connection with nature. Combining navigation, trekking, and exclusive access to hidden glacial landscapes, this journey takes you into the wild heart of Los Glaciares National Park, far from the traditional routes. Ideal for active explorers, it offers a rare opportunity to discover pristine scenery shaped by ice, mountains, and time.
.
Your day begins early in the morning with departure from El Calafate, heading toward the Glaciar Sur port on the South Arm of Lake Argentino. From there, you’ll embark on a scenic boat journey into the Andes, navigating through dramatic landscapes that gradually become more remote and untouched. Upon reaching the far end of the lake, the first trek begins, following a trail through native lenga forest with a gentle ascent toward a natural viewpoint overlooking Lake Frías—a valley once completely covered by ancient glaciers.
.
After taking in these panoramic views, you’ll descend to the lakeshore to board the Fitzcarraldo boat for a short but unforgettable navigation across Lake Frías. Known for its striking emerald color and crystal-clear waters, this crossing offers a unique visual contrast to the surrounding mountains and glaciers.
.
On the opposite shore, the adventure continues with a second trek of just over 4 kilometers through the Frías River valley. As you progress deeper into this isolated environment, the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic, with glaciers appearing closer at every step. The highlight of the journey awaits at the glacial amphitheater, a spectacular natural formation created by the Grande, Cubo, and Dickson glaciers. These masses descend into Laguna Frías Superior and Brazo Dickson, forming a breathtaking setting that feels truly untouched.
.
Here, you’ll have time to rest, take in the scenery, and enjoy a packed lunch surrounded by towering formations and pristine wilderness. Depending on weather conditions, lunch may be enjoyed outdoors overlooking the lagoon or inside a sheltered dome, ensuring comfort without losing the essence of the experience.
.
After this immersive encounter with Patagonia’s raw beauty, you’ll retrace your route back through the valley and across the lake, returning to El Calafate by sunset. The South Glacier Adventure is a physically engaging yet rewarding excursion, suitable for travelers aged 12 and above, with a moderate difficulty level that includes gentle elevation changes.
.
This experience is perfect for those looking to go beyond the classic highlights and discover a more exclusive side of Patagonia—where glaciers, mountains, and silence create an unforgettable sense of scale and adventure.
